Organ Playing for Good Friday

J+M+J

This is a piece I’d been working on for a while, and it seems appropriate for Good Friday. It is my favorite Lenten hymn. The lyrics:  O sacred head surrounded by crown of peircing thorns. O bleeding head so wounded, reviled and put to scorn. Death’s pallid hues come o’er you, the glow of life decays. Yet angel hosts adore you, and tremble as they gaze.

Adventures in Cooking: Maundy Thursday Lamb Dinner

J+M+J

Ever since my friend commented to me that her older sister was making lamb for supper on Maundy Thursday, in commemoration of the Passover Supper that Jesus ate, I have wanted to try it out. Last year I forgot about it, but this year I was on the ball, and we did eat a leg of lamb for supper. It turned out very tender, and even Maria (who had insisted she wouldn’t like it,) ate a good portion.  Joseph must have really liked it, because he inhaled it even before he ate his bread and butter, usually the first to disappear off his plate.

Drama Camp

J+M+J

Drama camp takes place every year at the beginning of June. Over a hundred homeschooled children meet from nine to eleven for four-to-five days, depending on the age of the child, and rehearse plays. This year, I was in a play about St. Genesius of Rome, the patron saint of actors. He was an actor in the emperor’s band of actors, until, that is, it was found out he became a Christian and was beheaded. The play was a play within a play, so at times the actors were rehearsing the play of Saint Genesius, and at other times, the director, who was played by me, was talking to them about how the play could be better. I successfully avoided getting a bad case of the vomiting sickness going around the house (everyone but me and Dad got it bad) and was able to be in the play on friday night. Everything went really well, and I spoke loud enough that everyone could hear me in the back row. That can be difficult because the acoustics aren’t very good in the school gym where we perform the play. I was very thankful that I was able to avoid the sickness and take part in the eighth annual drama camp.

Stations of the Cross

J+M+J

We got this kit for making the stations of the cross last year. Landon, Maria, John, and I never finished making them. Also, in the storing, the got a little broken. So a few days before Lent, I got them out, fixed them, and finished them. Now they are sitting on the mantle above the fireplace.

Ash Wednesday

J+M+J

For Alexander, the topic of the morning was, “Getting atet from the peet.” “Ashes from the priest.” That was all he could talk of the whole morning. After mass, later in the afternoon, I made pretzels to eat for supper. This recipe was for the yummy, thick, mouthwatering pretzels you get at the mall. Mmm… I didn’t know what I was doing when I was kneading the dough, and so I hoped the would be good. The recipe said to get the pretzel dough three feet long and thinner than the width of a pencil, and then shape it. I don’t know what the person who wrote that recipe was thinking. I made the pretzels thinker than that and only 1 1/2 feet long, and some of them came out of the oven hard because they were to thin. Three or so of them did turn out good, but they were not made as thin as the rest. I am going to try those again.

Shrove Tuesday

J+M+J

Today is Shrove Tuesday, which we celebrated by having ice cream. It is Lent already, earlier than it has been in almost 100 years. (Why?) We will be giving up television and candy, like we have for a couple years.

St. Blaise’s Day

J+M+J

Today it was St. Blaise’s feast day, so we got the blessing of the throat in Latin after mass. I was holding Joseph, and while he was getting his throat blessed, he did not move a muscle. He merely stared at the priest with a look that said, “What on earth are you doing? I don’t know you to well.”

Dedication of May

The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother.

Prayers to Mary

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

April Showers

J+M+J

The saying ‘April showers bring May flowers’ was put into effect today and yesterday (although I am not sure some of my flowers will wait until May). It rained and hailed yesteday, and was still raining today. The Sioux river is mildly flooding many areas along its banks.

Today is Palm Sunday, and I am very excited for Lent to be over and Easter to arrive.

Dedication of April

J+M+J

The month of April is dedicated to The Holy Spirit.

COME, HOLY SPIRIT

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the Hearts of Your faithful and kindle in us the Fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be recreated
–And You will renew the face of the earth, (Ps 104:30).
Let us pray:
O God, Who did instruct the hearts of Your faithful people by the Light of Your Holy Spirit, grant that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
