Tea

Koselig

Monday, November 13, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

As the temperatures dive, preparations for the cold days ahead keep morale high as we undertake the plunge towards the winter solstice. Like a squirrel in September, I lay in my provisions for the cold. Boots replace sandals, winter coats emerge from the closet. I stopped at a local store solely on account of my frigid toes, and hunted down the warmest pair of wool socks I could find. (I’m close to believing that was the best decision I made all week, as my feet have been warm and cozy since then.)

A Norwegian once visited my school to advertise January term study abroad opportunities in his country. The first question he was asked was about the temperatures at the top of the globe in the middle of January. He replied merrily in his light Norwegian accent, “Oh, there is no bad weather, only insufficient dress.” He swung his arms open as he spoke, as if to illustrate how the arctic natives embraced the cold.

In fact, I later found out that several Nordic languages have a word to describes how they go through winter with a smile- it’s Koselig in Norwegian. I am told it is hard to translate- falling somewhere between cozy feelings, love, and contentment. It comes from family, hot food, and cherishing the small things of each moment. I heard is described by a Norwegian exchange student as “That Christmas time feeling, except for all winter long.”

Pure Leaf’s vanilla black tea is my favorite this time of year, and I also enjoy candles-both artificial and real. Our local weather station is forecasting an extra cold winter this year, so I’m doing my best to get begin the season with a sufficient supply of Koselig.

Tea Time

Sunday, January 30, 2011 by Sarah 1 Comment

It’s snowing. Again. Winter was fun at first, especially with the ice skates I got for Christmas, but now it is beginning to drag. I have found, however, that a nice, hot cup of tea really helps to warm up the whole day. Apparently the rest of the family thinks so, too, because no sooner than had I made a cup a few days ago than everyone decided they needed to have some as well. Even Daniel was in on it, saying ‘tea’ in sign language over and over again until we got him his very own cup.

If You Give A Baby a Cookie. . .

Sunday, December 19, 2010 by Sarah 1 Comment

If you give a baby a gingerbread cookie, he will ask for another one.

If you give him another cookie, he will hand it to you and pull you over to the nearest chair to sit and eat it with him.

If you sit next to him and begin to eat your cookie, you will become thirsty and want a cup of tea.

If you get yourself a cup of tea, the baby will see the tea cup and then promptly tell you in sign language he wants a drink. By the time the baby has finished with his drink, your tea will be done, and you will bring it over to the table and dip your cookie into it.

If you dip your cookie into your tea, the baby will want to copy you with his own cookie, and say tea in sign language.

If you let the baby climb on your lap and dip his cookie into your tea, he will then try to take a sip of your tea, but you warn him it is too hot.

If the baby is told the tea is too hot, he will bring you a spoon so that you may give him a small spoonful of tea in the spoon after blowing on it. He will want more and more spoonfuls of tea, until you begin to get frustrated that you can’t even have a cup of tea in peace.

But then the baby will look up at you and give a beautiful smile, and you will melt and let him take as many spoons of tea as he wants.

Long Winter Days

These days, I’ve been browsing through every plant seed catalog that comes in the mail, dreaming of the warm days. Last week was especially hard to bear, since the temperature was below -15.This week has been better, in the upper 20’s and low 30’s, but it is still cold. Tomorrow, however, it may even get up to (gasp) 39 F! I am trying to remind myself that these mild temperatures are only temporary, but it still is very nice to have a little melting going on. We are in dire need of some melting, with the snow drifts coming even to the bottom branches of our trees:

One good way to make the days looking at this pile of snow a cozier is sipping tea with a little cream and sugar. We picked these limited edition teas from one of my favorite tea companies mid December, and we’re just getting to the end of our supply.

This is my new favorite kind of tea. I never tasted a tea that had such a distinct and unmistakeable flavor.

St. Valentine’s Day Prep

Saturday, February 9, 2008 by Sarah 2 Comments

J+M+J

It was cold and snow, so I made a cup of tea and Valentines. First I brewed the tea, and then I added Cream and Maria gave me a cube of sugar from the sugar bowl she got this Christmas from Grandpa and Grandma Frederes.

Then I gathered things that I might use and spread them out of my desk. I got a couple of curious investigators while I began to work. First I cut red rectangles with a tool for cutting paper straight. I then cut pink hearts and taped them on the red paper. Then I cut creamy white strips out, on which I wrote ‘Happy St. Valentines Day.’
