Koselig

Monday, November 13, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

As the temperatures dive, preparations for the cold days ahead keep morale high as we undertake the plunge towards the winter solstice. Like a squirrel in September, I lay in my provisions for the cold. Boots replace sandals, winter coats emerge from the closet. I stopped at a local store solely on account of my frigid toes, and hunted down the warmest pair of wool socks I could find. (I’m close to believing that was the best decision I made all week, as my feet have been warm and cozy since then.)

A Norwegian once visited my school to advertise January term study abroad opportunities in his country. The first question he was asked was about the temperatures at the top of the globe in the middle of January. He replied merrily in his light Norwegian accent, “Oh, there is no bad weather, only insufficient dress.” He swung his arms open as he spoke, as if to illustrate how the arctic natives embraced the cold.

In fact, I later found out that several Nordic languages have a word to describes how they go through winter with a smile- it’s Koselig in Norwegian. I am told it is hard to translate- falling somewhere between cozy feelings, love, and contentment. It comes from family, hot food, and cherishing the small things of each moment. I heard is described by a Norwegian exchange student as “That Christmas time feeling, except for all winter long.”

Pure Leaf’s vanilla black tea is my favorite this time of year, and I also enjoy candles-both artificial and real. Our local weather station is forecasting an extra cold winter this year, so I’m doing my best to get begin the season with a sufficient supply of Koselig.

Winter Days

Monday, January 18, 2016 by Sarah 1 Comment

I decided not to take a class during the one month interim semester at school this January, so I am currently enjoying an extended Christmas break. I’ve been keeping busy between teaching dance and starting a new job as a waitress, but it is very nice to be able to work while not have homework looming overhead.

January has brought the cold of winter in full force, so I frequently take refuge in hot cups of tea and coffee. I’ve been particularly enjoying some loose leaf black teas that Maria and I picked up at the health food at the beginning of the month. Its spicy fragrance and warmth is a perfect complement to winter’s long, dark evenings.

Once Christmas passes, I  quickly begin to think about the warmth and beauty of spring. Often the easiest way to deal with winter is to remember that it will eventually come to an end. Garden magazines are arriving in the mailbox, tempting me to wish the next few months away. However, I’m trying to put those thoughts off a little longer. Winter has its own beauty, though it’s harder to notice. I would hope to spend the rest of the season enjoying it.

Return to Winter

Thursday, February 5, 2015 by Sarah 1 Comment

We were fortunate enough to have a very mild last half of January, so winter has been easier to take this year. I was even starting to worry that the spring bulbs would get a little confused after temperatures in the 40’s and  50’s had melted away almost all the snow. I didn’t need to worry, though, since it is now cold enough, and we have eight new inches of snow. Yesterday as I walked to class in the early morning the wind whipped my cheeks till they were red and numb. It was quite a sudden reminder that there are still at least two months of winter left.

There are a few things that make even the coldest days of winter pleasant. Landon has been working on mastering the preparation of frothed milk cappuccinos. He also likes to make his drinks into works of art which are wonderful to sip on a cold afternoon.

We also brought a puppy home in October of last year. He’s a cairn terrier, the only breed of dog we’ve found that doesn’t give me allergies.  He’s very friendly with the little kids, and Claire is one of his favorite people, since she loves to give treats to him. We named him Watson, after Sherlock Holme’s faithful companion. The detective themed name suits him, for he always has his nose to the ground.

Here Mom is holding him on her birthday in November, when he was so little!

Cuddly is not the first word I would use to describe his bouncing personality, but as he is getting older he is starting to appreciate sitting with us on the couch. If you can catch him around one of his favorite nap times, he will stay on your lap for quite a while. He makes the perfect winter lap warmer.

Winter Weather

Tuesday, January 8, 2013 by Sarah 1 Comment

The last two days have been pretty balmy (for January, that is,) coming in at a whopping 34 degrees with no wind and the sun shining. It was wonderful after the single digit temps we started out with this year.  I went outside to feed some cornbread scraps to the chickens without a coat on. Then I rolled up my sleeves to the elbows, held out my arms, and stood there soaking up the sun’s warm rays. It felt delightful. I knew, however, that it wouldn’t last long. Sure enough, the weather forecast predicts only a few more days of relief before the temperature plummets again:

Winter Color

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 by Sarah 1 Comment

One thing I’ve learned is that hard winters are easier with lots of accessories. Always having a scarf ready to wear and gloves waiting in my coat pockets really makes winter a lot less bitter-and more colorful. I’m knitting a scarf with this beautiful yarn that will surely brighten up the drab months of January and February! Like a squirrel storing nuts for winter, I’m trying to gather enough color to last all the way till spring.

Winter Birds

Wednesday, February 16, 2011 by Sarah 1 Comment

The past week the temperatures emerged from below zero and today it soared up to fifty degrees. It has been a lovely break from winter and a nice head start on melting away the snow. Since it was so lovely, we figured the wildlife would be enjoying the spring-like weather as well, and we headed out to the Outdoor Campus to watch and draw some birds visiting their feeders. As we expected, there was a huge number of birds fluttering around the feeders, including sparrows, chickadees, white breasted nuthatches, downy and hairy woodpeckers, mallards, and even a cardinal! Everyone had fun drawing the birds, though they were frustrated that they wouldn’t stand still, and I got in a few good pictures.
