Creating Stepping Stones with Seashells

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

Shells are fun to collect at the beach, but it’s hard to know how to use them once buckets have been brought back. Filling glass bowls with them is pretty but cliche, and also not kid friendly. Instead, we used them with an inexpensive stepping stone kit. All my younger brothers and sisters wanted to help create the pattern. The finished product was a garden treasure everyone could enjoy.

Preliminary designs were traced out on the countertop:

seashells as flower petals and spirals.

We used some leftover glass from a stepping stone kit, and I let the kids make the designs. We then followed the instructions on the cement package, placing the stones and shells in the same pattern and then pouring the cement over them in the frame.

Presentation Points

Thursday, June 30, 2016 by Sarah 1 Comment

My family is not known for being particularly artistic. I don’t believe there is one of us that can wield any of the usual tools of creativity, such as colored pencils, paint, or clay. Occasionally though, one individual displays a small glimpse of normally dormant talent. This caught me off guard when I came upon into this sight:

Landon sewed this Gandalf costume for Halloween two years ago, but it rarely emerges from its protected hiding place. So I was a little confused to find Landon staring at me calmly in full wizard garb.

“Care for something to drink?”

I gave him a blank look, then thought I knew his plan. “Oh, you made coffee?” I asked hopefully.

“Just tea, thank you,” he replied, (I realized he was quoting the Lord of the Rings), and held out this:IMG_5993

The Tolkein-esque lettering on the front explain the Gandalf costume. The day before I had hinted to Landon that he should try to make a second tea bag organizer. He made the first a while ago, when he was more of a beginner at wood work, and it was unfinished and risked being ruined by any moisture.  I knew he had been practicing his carpentry skills lately, but didn’t realize he was quite this handy in the shop.

Tulle Tutu

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 by Sarah 2 Comments

Part of the fabric I bought last week went toward making this baby tutu prop for my photography. It was really easy to make, and I love the way it turned out.

Wedding Family Tree

Thursday, June 28, 2012 by Sarah 2 Comments

For Mom and Dad’s eighteenth wedding anniversary last week, Landon, Maria, and I put together this family tree as a present. Maria cut the ribbon, Landon did the calligraphy, (Boy, did Landon improve his calligraphy skills. He ended up rewriting the first names at the end, he was so much better) and I drove to Hobby Lobby for the materials (oh, how I lu-uuuve my drivers license).

A big thank you to my Grandparents who went through thick photo albums to find all of the photographs!

Daniel’s New Hobby

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 by Sarah 3 Comments

Daniel has just figured out how to click duplos together, and now he will sit for an hour straight all by himself, taking these blocks apart and putting them back together. I”m sure he feels really special and grown-up, as the older boys love to play with them and guard their creations from Daniel, who would love to take them apart. I snapped these pictures when the baby was intent on his work of art.

John Paul turned seven August 30th. This is the cake I made for him.

One of John’s gifts was a stuffed monkey. He made a jungle gym for it outside out of scraps of wood from things that Dad has built.

The All Saints Eve Party

Sunday, November 11, 2007 by Sarah 2 Comments

J+M+J

Each year on Halloween, Saint Margaret’s Fellowship hosts an All Saints Eve Party. Children dress up as a saint and play saint related games such as: St. Peter’s Fishing Hole, Saint Bingo, and St. Therese’s Rose Toss. There is also a parade of saints and a Litany of Saints where children say the name of their saint and everyone responds, pray for us.
This year, I was Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha. I made my own costume and Maria’s St. Joan of Arc costume and Alexander’s St. John the Baptist costume.
My friend Grace and I were in charge of Pin the Bread in St. Elizabeth’s Basket (inspired by the way St. Queen Elizabeth secretly took bread to the poor) and the Halo Toss. First I ran the bread game. The tape on the bread was so worn out it wouldn’t stick to the picture of St. Elizabeth, so I had to constantly grab the bread from all over the place along with tying the blindfold on. Then Grace and I switched, and I worked at replacing the heads and wings on the angels that wouldn’t stay until the party ended. It was fun work.
