A Sucker by any Other Name

Friday, April 21, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

The name of of a certain brand of suckers has provided a lot of comic relief for the family lately.

Dum-dums have been Mom’s first line of defense for long car rides, since it provides the longest distraction for two year olds for the least amount of sugar. Benjamin enjoys them so much that Dad has taken to saving a stash for him. Benjamin knows this, and the suckers are on the forefront of his mind whenever he sees Dad.

It is a well known fact that long periods of silence and small children can be an unruly combination. The stretches of quiet in the EF Mass at our parish have always been a challenge for the babies. Now, whenever Benjamin sees Dad in the choir loft or the back of the church, he says in a clear voice, audible to the whole congregation:

“Daddy! Dum-dum.”

…which has a slightly different meaning if you don’t know the context of what he is saying.

Blown in by the Blizzard

Friday, February 24, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

This creature was recently spotted roaming far outside of normal migratory paths. Confused and disoriented, it was still displaying many instinctual behaviors such as crouching, tiptoeing, and scanning its surroundings through its accessory visual organ. The creature is presumed to have been blown off course by the latest South Dakota blizzard.

Well Done, Little Brother, Well Done

Monday, August 22, 2016 by Sarah 2 Comments

My brothers will inform you that I am not easy to startle or fool. I don’t blink at rubber tarantulas on my shoulder, or plastic cockroaches in my closet. I do usually double check plastic lego spiders, but I’m usually suspicious. So, I must give credit to some mischievous rascal who wound this through the leaves of the garden. I didn’t realize it was made of wood until I was taking a picture before it got away.

Daniel later confessed. When questioned for a motive, he replied, “I wanted to scare someone.”
